With more than 25 years’ experience as a leader in professional firms, John established his own consultancy in 2005 to share my expertise and experience with professionals looking to move beyond the traditional "we sell time" model.

This has seen me become a leading advocate for professional firms to genuinely transform and become "firms of the future" now by:

  1. finding or rediscovering their purpose,
  2. moving away from pricing their services solely by time,
  3. cease using ineffective performance management ‘tactics’, and
  4. implement alternatives to the partnership model.

For those firms willing to do so, the result is a knowledge firm rather than merely a product or service firm. Such firms have far happier owners, team members and clients - as well as a pricing strategy that is no longer limited by people or hours.

Shaun qualified as a solicitor in 1985 and specialized in litigation. He was an early adopter of mediation, qualifying as a mediator in 2001, long before commercial mediation became mainstream. Since 2014, he has been involved in law firm management of a top 200 law firm both as a Commercial Director and CEO.

Shaun has always had an interest in marketing and business development and has been fortunate enough to have created large and successful legal teams at firms where he has worked, including niche teams such as Property Management Debt recovery, Catastrophic Injury and Leasehold Enfranchisement teams.

On the marketing and business development side, he was delivering legal training webinars for hundreds of delegates for trade associations and industry sectors as early as 2005, long before the technology we use now was even on the market.

During the period he was CEO of Brethertons LLP, the firm implemented a large change management program which resulted in 120 staff having to apply for clearly defined roles. The outcome of the program included creating a new governance model, career progression pathways, a new legal team structure, detailed role profiles, employee banding, and key result areas linked to performance.

In 2021, after visiting the US and liaising with lawyers in Australia, he achieved a long-held ambition, when he led the design and implementation of a value pricing project at Brethertons. Value pricing is not an easy project to deliver. It requires full leadership and management support and a paradigm shift to embrace a new way of thinking.
